I’m glad that my curiosity had me reading your post today because it was so beautifully written and it resonated with me . I reached out to some old friends recently who I no longer associate with, due to our differences around the Covid narrative which divided us . It was like trying to turn on the light (again) but it wouldn’t go on, you know how you follow the wire only to find it has been unplugged? I tried to plug it back in but the line was dead. Oh well, I tried! I tried to be curiously loving despite the fact I never really changed who I was these past five years . I guess covid shed a light on who we all truly are .
Anyway I guess we just have to keep trying - and keep our hearts open.
Thanks for your beautiful efforts and for sharing your thoughts and feelings .
Joanie!! (I’ve never heard you called Joan or Joanna! 😂). Thank you for your time and attention. I really appreciate you reading this. I, too, I have lost many friends & family because of differences in opinion and views on the world. It’s truly heartbreaking. I don’t know what the answer is, but I do know that I will continue to be curious, to have an open heart, and to be truly interested in why people believe what they do. 🙏🏼
This is a most insightful post. You have identified a serious problem we face collectively. Curiosity is what drives us to learn more about the world and each other. Both are serve as the most effective mirrors we have. We are essentially witnessing a degradation of self-inquiry in our society as a whole. Is there any better evidence for this than the near impossibility of engaging with anyone who disagrees with us with civility?
What has happened? Are we too busy dealing with more important matters? Have we numbed ourselves with pharmaceuticals and recreational medicines? Are we more interested in the messaging coming from our social media feeds and the content that has been curated especially for us than what a stranger may have to offer?
Please continue to share how you walk through this blessed world.
Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment. The lack of curiosity amongst so many makes me feel like I’m living among NPC’s. (Non-Player Characters). It’s truly heartbreaking. But this is exactly why we need to build communities. We need to teach our children to ask people questions and be curious. And we all need to return to the love of getting to know someone face-to-face rather than through their perfectly projected lives on social media. ♥️
You bring up an interesting point. How do we teach our kids to be curious? Is it even possible? I'm not so sure.
I do think that curiosity can only blossom in a person who is not afraid. Perhaps we should be trying to help our children be happy and confident and curiosity will naturally follow.
What a great question to be asking! Why--or why not--are people curious about others around them?
I've been watching this behavior for a long time. I can remember back in 1999 or 2000 being on a date and noticing that the guy did not know how to ask questions. 🤓
Now, I tend to attribute the lack of interest in others to a sort of insecurity and lack of self-knowledge. How can one have interest in others without having firm grounding in self?
In the study group at the farm we practice what is called Goethean Conversation--in that everything said must be connected to the topic and to what the prior speaker offered. It's a very structured way of practicing this interest in the thoughts of others. Now I wish that all meetings were run this way. 😁💛 It's called "Goethean" because it's a sort of phenomenological approach to ideas and to other people.
I think the "pandemic" has a lot to do with how people are behaving....I see people still standing too far apart, or on far too many occasions , still wearing masks...they are broken. The distraction element is very real as well, especially if they are plugged into the mainstream media machine...the mockingbird media....karen read, houses burning, car accidents , impossible plane crashes....and I certainly mean that with regard to Air India...the odds of that are zero...the upshot is that people are operating under stress they may not even acknowledge...and the scary part...it is all by design...just ask Cass Sunstein ..."cognitive infiltration" ...control of perception...its been around forever but they are much better at it now with smart phones, social networks..etc...thank you inqtel and darpa...

Which is what I love about you. You have such a beautiful heart Jilli and I am certainly not the only one who feels that way!
